The state of Uganda’s Rivers and Waterways

Rivers in Uganda face significant challenges, including pollution from industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and untreated sewage. Deforestation in river basins has led to increased soil erosion and sedimentation, while over-extraction of water for agriculture and urban use threatens river ecosystems. Climate change is exacerbating these issues by altering rainfall patterns and increasing the frequency of droughts, further impacting river flows and water availability.

To address these problems, several solutions can be implemented. Improving waste management through stricter enforcement of industrial regulations and investment in sewage treatment infrastructure is crucial. Reforestation programs can help restore forest cover in river basins, reducing erosion and sedimentation. Promoting sustainable agricultural practices can minimise chemical runoff and soil erosion. Water conservation measures, such as efficient irrigation systems and urban water management, can reduce pressure on river resources. Finally, river restoration projects can help rehabilitate degraded ecosystems, improving overall river health and biodiversity. And such is the job of Uganda Rivers and Waterways Ltd.
